BRAIN FOG
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy shows promise for treating brain fog by increasing oxygen delivery to the brain, reducing neuroinflammation, and boosting cellular energy, especially when symptoms stem from post-COVID conditions, concussions, or chronic fatigue
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing 100% pure oxygen in a pressurized therapeutic chamber, at 1.5 ATA (atmospheres absolute). Under these conditions, oxygen dissolves directly into plasma, lymph, and cerebrospinal fluid. This surge in oxygen supports a number of brain-healing effects:
Improved cerebral blood flow and oxygen delivery to neurons
Reduced inflammation and stress
Enhanced mitochondrial energy production (ATP)
Activation of neuroplasticity and neurogenesis (the brain’s ability to form new connections)
Restoration of blood-brain barrier integrity
These mechanisms make HBOT an appealing therapy for cognitive dysfunction, especially when brain fog stems from injury, illness, or inflammation
Study: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy improves neurocognitive functions and symptoms of post-COVID condition: randomized controlled trial
Discussion: The pathogenesis of post-COVID-19 condition in the central nervous system includes direct neuronal injury in the frontal lobes, chronic injury mediated by glial cells, ischemic events mediated by thrombotic events, mitochondrial dysfunction, and chronic inflammation. Growing evidence shows that new HBOT protocols can induce neuroplasticity and improve brain function even months to years after the acute injury. These protocols, including the one used in the current study, utilize the so called “hyperoxic-hypoxic paradox”, by which repeated fluctuation in both pressure and oxygen concentrations induce gene expression and metabolic pathways that are essential for regeneration without the hazardous hypoxia. These pathways can modulate the immune system, promote angiogenesis, restore mitochondrial function and induce neurogenesis in injured brain tissue. Some or all of these effects may explain the beneficial effects found in the current study.
Conclusion: HBOT can improve dysexecutive functions, psychiatric symptoms (depression, anxiety and somatization), pain interference symptoms and fatigue of patients suffering from post-COVID-19 condition. The beneficial effect can be attributed to increased brain perfusion and neuroplasticity in regions associated with cognitive and emotional roles.
Study: Impact of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy on Cognitive Functions: a Systematic Review
This study reviewed available results from a wide range of studies.
Conclusion: research shows positive results for HBOT improving cognitive function, however study limitations related to HBOT protocol should be noted. Exact protocols for each neurological state are to be determined.
