CANCER
Clinical trials and recent studies show that hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is sage and effective as an adjunctive treatment for managing radiation and surgical side effects in cancer patients. Additionally tumour aggressiveness may be reduced as hypoxic tumours are weakened and metastatic tumours are targeted. The prevention of cancer cannot be overlooked as decreased inflammation, normalised intracellular oxygen levels, cellular detoxification and supported energy processes within cells are important mechanisms.
HBOT, may help with some problems caused by cancer or its treatment—such as osteoradionecrosis, which occurs when radiation damages blood vessels within the bone. Additionally, it’s often used before and after surgery to help with healing and reduce side effects.
Speak with your oncologist or care team if you have any questions about whether HBOT therapy may help. There are some contra-indications for its use
A recent randomized trial found benefit for people with painful, long-term breast cancer radiation side effects. Scientists are also investigating whether giving extra oxygen may make some cancer treatments, such as radiation therapy or drugs, work better by reducing low-oxygen areas inside tumors.
Study: Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Managing Cancer Treatment Complications: A Safety Evaluation
Conclusion: This study included 45 patients (median age: 64 years; 60% male) who received a median of 27 HBOT sessions. At initiation, 27.9% of the patients were classified as cured, 53.5% were in remission, and 18.6% had active cancer. Over a median follow-up period of 783 days, 8.7% experienced recurrence, 2.7% had persistent active cancer, and 59.5% had no recurrence. No HBOT-related complications were observed during the course of HBOT.
Study: Breaking the hypoxia barrier: Advances and challenges of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in cancer treatment
Conclusion: Tumor hypoxia represents a fundamental barrier to effective cancer therapy, driving resistance to chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy while fostering invasion and metastasis. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), by substantially increasing dissolved oxygen in plasma, offers a unique approach to reoxygenate tumors and remodel the tumor microenvironment. Preclinical and clinical studies have revealed that HBOT enhances drug penetration.

Study: Hyperbaric Oxygen Boosts PD-1 Antibody Delivery and T Cell Infiltration for Augmented Immune Responses Against Solid Tumors
The results demonstrate that HBO promoted PD-1 Ab delivery and T cells infiltration into tumor parenchyma by depleting the extracellular matrix's main components, such as collagen and fibronectin. Furthermore, HBO disrupts hypoxia-mediated immunosuppression and helps PD-1 Ab trigger robust cytotoxic T lymphocytes and long-lasting immunological memory to inhibit tumor relapses. Such enhanced immune responses are effective in solid tumors from rodents and the cancer cells from hepatocellular carcinoma patients. The results illustrate that HBO bolsters antitumor efficacy of PD-1 Ab, and the HBO-PD-1 Ab combination is a promising stroma-rich solid tumors' treatment in the clinic.
